Re: [Digital BW] ImagePrint 4 RIP to Mike

2002-03-10 by Michael Kravit

George,

The ImagePrint 4 RIP is just as easy to use as the Piezo RIP or easier. In fact, they provide templates so you can print a number of the same or different images on one page. This is something that the Piezo software does not have.

As far as controlling the inks. The Colorbyte ImagePrint 4 RIP does all this for you automatically. They profile the different inks, papers and printers and all you do is select your paper, ink and printer. You can center your image, move it around and if you so inclined adjust the ink channels individually to obtain differing results. They provide visual curves so you can see the affect that the adjustments have made.

The software is very simple. Their brochure and website explains everything that their product does. In fact, the product is available in various flavors. You can purchase it with Postscript support if you wish or without. You can but if for one printer or with a license for many. Pricing ranges from $499 to over $2,000.

The bottom line is that they are targeting a market where flexibility is the key. They want you to be able to use any ink you want, any paper you want, and their software will be the common ground or bridge so to speak.

How does one know that a particular ink position needs to be adjusted? Is a
RIP something a photographer printing only his / her own work would
  appreciate and use effectively?
I think the Colorbyte people might do well to explain things to average
photogs as to why their product would be beneficial.
But the product should not be much more complex to use than the Cone Piezo
  RIP.
  Thanks for any replies.
