Previously the most expensive Photograph ever sold previously was a large done by Peter Lik it sold for 6.5 Million.. Jeff's image sold for 6.5 million and 10 cents so he beat the record by 10 cents.. So these guys competed against each other sounds like ..Anyway Jeff's piece was his current master multimedia works.. His last big deal was a piece that he made ( a construction ) using 300,010 separate images and it was a frame by frame effort. He also does filming.. He's no slouch and while you may not like his art work he hasn't had much trouble selling it. As a participant in the industry I think that is a good thing especially given that most of the processes today in photography etc can be implemented by a much larger mass of artisans then say 10 years ago...Not to mention inflation. In the past 10 years the cost of a vehicle has basically doubled. Anyway yes many buy art as an investment but to say they do so without regard to actually liking the piece is pretty far out.. They could easily simply select another piece they do. High end pieces have a lot to do with the artist also actually not necessarily simply the art.. As far as the music industry goes it's the biggest it's ever been... Music has evolved to an incredible place. I will say that I don't like all the music that's available now but I'll choose to describe it as the Music industry is way wider.. so we have more choices available. I think we'd all agree that what is described as music has changed tremendously thru the years but I can still go to Bozeman and hear a symphony. As far as your take on the 6.5 million purchase ...well I'm looking at it quite differently.. I especially don't want to devalue the art work no way. So simply put some one thought enough of the piece and of course could afford it to trade 6.5 mil to be the proud owner of.. From an industry standpoint that is literally incredible and it will surely have some trickle down effects to other sellers and buyers ..The bar has officially been raised. The industry has been stuck to long . So to sum up.. I get that it is a bit shocking, but degrading it is maybe not the right way to look at it. It is simply one transaction that went very well...That's ok.. and I view it as awesome from an industry standpoint.. And frankly that process which you've down played is an extremely difficult process and I know you know that. Anyway smile my friend ... the art market is picking up.. :-) That's a good thing.. jimbo -----Original Message----- From: DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com [mailto:DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com] Sent: Sunday, December 14, 2014 10:45 AM To: DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [Digital BW] what do you think? It's sadly true that most buyers of expensive art are solely interested in the investment potential and they really don't care about the content or artistry, so long as it isn't offensive to their tastes. Art appreciation means something else for them. We live in a topsy turvy world. In the world of music, fine orchestras are starving while DJ's are getting rich. The country is full of people who have tons of money and the aesthetic values of a hamster. This sale is probably just a made up marketing story, but I wouldn't be surprised if some fool actually did pay 6.5 million. It's a nice print and I'm sure it was executed well by the lab that made it for him, but it's far from unique and I'm sorry, photos laminated to Plexiglas just aren't worth that kind of money. I used to make lots of them for photographers and artists and it's nothing either new or unique, but buyers who don't know any better think they are. -----Original Message----- From: 'Gary Brown' baffin@... At that price, questions about 'art' or the quality of the photo are irrelevant. Nobody is buying because they like it, or is some transcendent setting-aside of the veil between us and reality, it is simply a speculative investment bet to do better than oil futures or 470lb of gold bullion. -- Regards Tony Sleep ------------------------------------ ------------------------------------ Please visit the Group Homepage to check the Files, and other resources as they are often being updated. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint If you wish to receive no emails or just a daily digest, or you wish to unsubscribe, please edit your Membership preferences by visiting this same page.
