understanding product codes on box of PremierArt paper

2016-01-25 by paulmwhiting@...

I've been using PremierArt Fine Art Smoth paper in the 205gsm weight for years. A little warmer than what I was used to from darkroom days but it grew on me. Spent some time at my local art supply store to find a mat board that was a good match. A plus is that it was printable on both sides, which appealed to my frugal nature.

But lately, upon opening a new box, the paper was noticeably brighter. The paper I was used to was warmer because it had no OBA's, which I've grown to appreciate. Here's the code on the box:

Smooth 205gsm C2S 2220-85115 E50#6649

What I interpret is that C2S means coated both sides, 2220 is the paper style... no OBA's, Hot Press (ie Smooth), etc. 8511 means 8.5" x 11" and 5 means 50 sheets to the box. For a 25 sheet box that last number is 3, which is 25 rounded up.

So far so good. But the E50# varies from box to box, for example E50#6649, E50#7079, etc. so I think that must be the lot number. Aha... so the paper is made and packaged in lots, that makes sense. But my new box, with a different lot number, is much whiter than other lot numbers. Not a good thing! Error in packaging maybe?

Anyone experienced this? Perhaps I should call the company but I wanted to run this by the group first.

Thanks for any thoughts,

Paul
