Maybe you should invest in better color management so that your soft proof
on the monitor is a nearly perfect match to your final print. Also, I almost
always have scraps of by good papers around and when in doubt, I run a
section of the image on the scrap.

Cost is the reason. Using an inexpensive proofing paper lets you experiment
and adjust without burning through a pile of the expensive final paper.
Then when you feel you are where you want to be you can make final
adjustments on proof pieces of the final paper.
