I think that they imply that there's a paper jam. Somewhere in there may be a scrap of paper or something like that so I guess you have to do is take a really good look inside and see what you can see. If there is no actual piece of paper perhaps the sensor has failed.

That thread perfectly describes my problem and the author stressed that the lights are flashing together, not alternately, which matches no Epson error code.
Unfortunately, the problem does not get solved in the thread, so it does not solve the mystery.
