Digital BW, The Print

I am fairly new at this and have a question about applying curves to 
adjust the image for ink type and paper. What are the advantages 
and/or disadvantages to applying a curve in an adjustment layer as 
the last step before printing vs applyig a curve through a transfer 
function. It seems like they accomplish the same thing. Am I missing 
something.
