RE: [Digital BW] Problem with Heavyweight Paper on Rolls

2002-03-21 by Paul Roark

Wolf,

The latest thing I tried, which seemed to work on EAM rolls at least, was to
put the cut paper between a couple of my photo blotter papers. I then
dampened the blotters with distilled water that was in a hand sprayer
bottle. The blotter paper sandwich was put in drying screens to dry.

I'm not sure that I have the system down totally, but the water/dampness
seems to be a key to softening the paper and getting the curl out.

I've also made a hanger such that the paper is held by the top at both
sides. Then a second set of clips is put on the bottom of the paper as a
weight to keep it straight. I use this after printing to allow the print to
dry with some tension on it to keep it straight. I might use the hanger
system and the water mister directly on the paper next time to see if it
dries faster.

Paul

Subject: [Digital BW] Problem with Heavyweight Paper on Rolls

Does anyone have any suggestions or tricks that ease the loading of
  thick, curled paper?

I've concluded a bunch of paper tests and settled on Photo Rag 308 as
my 'stock' paper, and in order to have as great a variety of
possibilies re paper size, I bought a 24" roll that I had cut up into 2
  smaller
rolls of 11" and 13". Problem is, there is an inherent curl to the
paper when I cut it down to size, which even a week's habitation in a
  mount press wouldn't straighten.

My problem is that the paper will simply not feed through my printers
(a 1200 and a 2000P) without a great deal of fiddling, pushing, and
frustration. It works OK in smaller size, 8.5x11 or less, but I have
yet to get a sheet of 13x19 or longer through either printer.

Was buying a roll a bad move, or is there some solution? Any
  suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
