Hi, When you create a curve adjustment layer it should already have a layer mask attached. Just click right on the mask and paint away... there is no need to go into the channel palette. You've described painting in quick mask mode, I find it easier to see your painting effects directly on the image without the fake rubylith. You may also want to try some contrast masking. Highlight your image layer, hit option+command+tilde (on a mac). Choose a curve adjustment layer and it will automatically attach a mask of your selection... you can invert it prior to choosing a curve layer to choose the other tones. Play with it, it's cool.... you can effect all forms of adjustments that way, using different opacities too of course.
