Dynamic range ad nauseum: silver vs Piezo prints

2002-03-30 by Mitch Alland

These dynamic range discussions and getting pedantic, boring and irrelevant. It seems to me the whole thing started with a comparison of silver and Piezo prints, which was not resolved and has gotten lost in streams of obscure, uninteresting postings. Can we get back to how silver and Piezo prints compare?

In a published interview, Ralph Gibson stated that silver and Piezo prints are different and beautiful in their own, different, ways; but that he prefers silver prints. My own impression is that Piezo prints have more longer tonal range and wider gradation, particularly in the dark and mid tones. I'm not sure about the light tones. The questions are:

1. What do you think about the differences in silver and Piezo prints?

2. Can these differences be measured, and how? Has anyone measured there differences. I would think such measurements would involve, dentsity of the darkest and lightest tones, the dynamic range and the smoothness of the gradation.
