After considerable testing and experimentation, I discontinued all my CRTs to
the attic, and run my studio entirely with LCDs. The resolution is lower,
especially per dollar, but the gamut is pretty similar, and the brightness is
considerably higher, allowing you to do color correction without working in a
tomb.

Only one that is under $600US, the Spyder and PhotoCAL or OptiCAL from
ColorVision.

I use a G3 PowerBook, and calibrating it is a definate improvement, though
the viewing angle is still to narrow vertically, so that you have to move
your head up and down to get the brightness correct on any given part of the
screen. The G4 PowerBooks are better, though not as good as the desktop
LCDs... and definately in need of hardware calibration; the correction curves
needed on the Titanium G4 PowerBooks is pretty amazing.

Massively better than the clamshell G3 iBook, but not up to the G4 PowerBook
level.

That can be workable, I sometimes serve files from my PowerBook... but a G3
iMac for about $700 would be the cheapest server.
