Lyson QB: black or magenta?

2002-04-30 by Rick Schiller

I posted my HELP w/ new 860 a couple of days ago and seem to have the work
flow sorted out. Now the big question, are these inks really Black. All
my prints have a decided magenta cast under all sources of light. I sent
the following email to Lyson and would welcome all comments, hints and
experiences of others:

I recently started using your Lyson QB neutral in a new old stock Epson 860
printer. The printer is working properly, all test patterns come out
perfect. I always get a very noticeable magenta cast from your inks,
whether viewed under tungsten or flourescent light. It is less noticeable
under window light but still present.

In the hopes that you can help me, I am going to very specifically list my
work flow:

1. Tmax400 35mm BW negative exposed at 200 developed 100% in Kodak D76 stock
2. Scanned as 12bit (saved as 16bit) into Photoshop 5.5 on a Canon 2720
scanner in ColorMatchRGB space as a BW file.
3. Spotted using proper PS tool and size of file reduced to 9"/300dpi.
4. Levels adjusted to get maximum blacks. Mid & high points adjusted as
necesary to get a full tonal range print, either using levels or curves. OR
both.
5. File reduced to 8 bit and further retouching done at this point if
necessary.
6. File converted to RGB and sent to printer. Paper is Epson Premium Glossy
Paper normally. Advanced printer screen in PHotoshop is set at RGB w/ PCM:
uncheck (off).
7. Epson 860 printer settings are paper: photo paper (I found despite Lyson
recommendations the the Color Film setting gives a mottled effect and photo
paper works better with Epson glossy. No color controls, error diffusion,
1440 dpi, hi speed unchecked.

Every file has printed with a magenta cast. What can I do to make the
files print true Black & White as you advertise the inks are?
