Re: 1290 and VM-curves! Give up???

2002-05-02 by ruhrfoto

Bo,
I tried MIS VM on a 1270, a 1290 and a 7500.
Randomly got very good (quasi perfect) results, which fed my
hope to have consistent results one day. But that happy day
never showed up: if (after a lot of curve tweaking) a single image
was nearly perfect - the next one would be hopelessly
posterized.
Neither can I blame the inks, nor can I blame Paul (whom I
admire) - because I never printed with the "right" curves - they
were made for the 1280 or for the 7000 but not for 1270/90 or
7500.
I can only blame myself because I never made up my mind to go
into the profiling-procedure with Paul because posting the
scanned targets by e-mail added artifacts to the results and
posting them per mail over the great pond seemed to be too
time consuming.
Actually my results were such unpredictable that I switched back
to MIS FS (running these inks by the Piezo Driver or IP4 -
depending on the machine). Both are absolutely consistent.
Having red a lot of postings about Paul´s curves, I´ve got the
impression, that rather a bunch of people have got same
problems (inconsistent results and posterization), while others
seem to be quite happy with their results. I can´t explain it - but it
seems to be obvious, that the results are very platform -, printer-
and driver dependant.
Surprisingly this is not the case with the ImagePrint4 RIP (which
has the disadvantage to be rather expensive). Up to date the
software is ready only for the PC.
Actually I have a very slow PC (Celeron) - but a quick Mac - so I
do all the scanning and image-work on my Mac and then send
the image to the PC and print it via the IP4 RIP on my 7500.
I do not understand what a RIP is, but: it is WYSIWYG/P - without
posterization and very consistent from print to print.

Again special thanks to Paul, it is my fault - having not enough
patience for his system.
Bernd
