I would hardly call Thumbs+ either hokey or aimed at the novice. Unfortunately neither Thumbs not Imatch have a Mac version. You should also look at Portfolio- cross-platform, server version, long established, etc. Without knowing more about your database needs, it's hard to be more specific. Get demos of the different programs, and see how your needs might be met.
