My B&W posterisation experience - was 8bit or 16bit

2002-05-22 by garrysarre

Back in the old days (2years ago). I sent out a 35mm B&W neg for a
test scan to a photo shop. I asked for a "Black & White scan", I was
very digital literate then. I got back an 18meg tif. It was 8bit
mono.

Remember, I was dumber then. I adjusted probably about 30 different
selections levels, end points/midpoints - everything - all in 8bit
mono. Then I thought, now I want this sepia, converted to RGB 8bit
and put some sepia in, sent it of for lightjetting to 24" wide.
PRESTO - Posterization.

I told the sales guy that I didn't like his scanner, it "banded.

So there we go, my 8bits worth (oh no)

Anyone know why they have 12bits in slr digitals? Is it a (4)bit
better (oh no no no!)
