Keith, it would be important _not_ to have to convert when bringing a scan into PS. For that to happen, your output profile in your scanning software has to match your favorite PS settings. Or, if you have "ideal" workspaces in PS, do it the other way around and match your scanner setup to them. Getting 16bit data is a good thing if your scanner software is limited and you have to accept "raw" scans. Otherwise it's a waste of bandwidth (if you can get 8bits that you have control over during the scanning process).
