Mike, I've had a Polaroid Sprintscan 120 for the better part of a year and have had no problems--Especially No ticking, although it is a bit noisy when scanning. Whines and groans a lot! I usually scan in 16 bits B&W with Silverfast 5.5. I invert in PS then adjust levels before switching to 8 bits. Most often the image is fairly light in 16 bits before adjusting levels or curves. Fingers of death on a raw scan indicate a problem I've never encountered. I'd keep after tech support it may be a stepper motor problem of some kind.
