RE: [Digital BW] Piezotones with Epson driver

2002-07-10 by Alessandro Pardi

Thanks Todd,
this is very interesting.
Prices for 4 ounce bottles for the 1160 are $175 for Piezotones, vs. $52 for
MIS-FS. I know that it's up to everyone to decide how much an improvement is
worth, but the obvious question now is: is there a significant difference
between prints from these two inksets (or whatever other inks you were using
before)?

Thanks,
alex

I'm currently trying them with the Randall curves with an 1160. My results
are very good except there is a bit of compression of the blacks roughly in
the 92-98%, which I haven't compensated for just yet. But it's subtle. It's
not even evident on a 21 step wedge, though it is on Tyler's Zees. But other
than that it does very very well. The Zees throughout the rest of the range
are as well defined as I've seen from the two Piezo samples of Tyler's Zees
I've seen. Anyway, this reflects the ability of the system to differentiate
1% differences in tones, so I'd say this workflow can separate 1% tones
throughout the entire range except around 92-98%, where it separates by
about 2%. Pretty good and a tweak or two may better that.

It'll be interesting to see how well the performance matches between the
different color Piezotones.

Todd
