This eventually happens with all pigment inks systems regardless of paper choice. I'd be very careful about inferring that printing on a particular paper killed a printer. Regular maintenance is a necessary part of quad printing...but printers have a limited life span...my guess is that many of us are printing on borrowed time. I recently had three printers go down in one week. That said, the person that I know that does regular (at least monthly) maintenance has a 1160 that has been printing quads (with Cone inks) through a CIS non-stop for 1.5 years...a lot of prints.
