Re: [Digital BW] Nikon 8000 for B&W- Workflow suggestions?

2002-07-15 by Peter Lindman

Bill,

I use the Nikon 8000 for my medium format black&white negs. I doubt if
there's a carrier available that will work for 4-up strips. The end of the
filmstrip sticks up and jams as the holder feeds into the scanner. I've
gotten the holder jammed inside the scanner a couple of times and had to
take the cover off and wiggle it loose. Unnerving.

Scanning B&W negs requires a workaround to avoid shadow and highlight
clipping. Turn off all color management in the NikonScan prefs and scan the
neg as a positive to avoid the clipping. Invert the neg in the LCH editor
(using just the luminosity curve). Click the histogram icon in the curve
editor and then use the analog gain to center the resulting histogram. Once
all that's done, use the curve editor to adjust the tonal range of the
image; scan in 14-bit and you're done.

If that's a little too abbreviated, let me know and I'll send you a couple
of screen shots off-list.
