Re: [Digital BW] Selenium beta--was will all the beta testers please stand up??

2002-07-17 by Robert Morrison

I have, however, received free inks to test the new Piezotones...Selenium
and Neutral Warm. I believe that this is standard practice for betas. We
are under absolutely no pressure to say "positive" things. We are just
asked not to tell anyone about the inks or our testing until the reports are
in and the inks are announced to the general public, then we are free (as
Martin did) to say anything we want.

I think both ink sets are spectacular, I have the Neutral-Warms in my 7000
now and the Seleniums in my 1280...however, I'm considering doing a flip
flop because I really like the Seleniums. I have not had great results with
the Piezo driver with these inks on some of the standard papers (EAM and
Photorag) though. I'm getting better results with imageprint with the
Neutral-Warm Piezotones (haven't tried the Selenium's with IP yet).
Personally, I think the piezo profiles need to be adjusted for some of the
papers, but Cone insists that this is not the experience of the other beta
testers.

That said...I wouldn't consider using MIS inks now...the performance
difference is just too big for me now...even if you have to do some image
adjustment from what you used to print with. I also agree with Martin that
EAM is the standout with the Selenium's. The dmax is higher with photorag,
but the color is nicer with EAM...I don't like the warming that I see with
the Hahnemuhle papers. I also get great results with Brightcube
Semi-Matte...but the results are more neutral...not as "cool" as the EAM.
All of the quad pigment inks seem to warm on the luster/gloss papers. In
the case of the Selenium's I think the result is very neutral on the
Semi-Matte sprayed after printing with Krylon. This is the print that I
just put out in the last DigitalBW print exchange. I used to use FS-N for
this purpose...but the Selenium print is just richer in tone...sorry that is
a rather subjective statement...but when I look at the two prints FS-N looks
blue and Selenium looks neutral. On EAM I would say that my general
impression is that FS-N looks blue and Selenium Piezotones look ever so
slightly eggplant.
