Re: [Digital BW] Scanning B&W 35MM Negatives using Nikon Super CoolScan 4000

Ken,

What size are you scanning the negative to? Do you scan the orginal size of the 35mm or do you scan to 11x14 if that's the print size you want?

Barry

With my Nikon 4000 I just scan everything at max resolution (4000 ppi) and max bit depth (14), with 16x sampling, unless I'm sure I need a certain size or quality (Uncle Elmo's pics of Niagra Falls get the quickest thing on the menu). That way I don't have a concern about re-scanning and downsizing won't hurt anything. In the preview window, it is convenient to set levels (bring in the sliders in the curves window, to touch each side of the histogram). Be sure not to use unsharp mask. That can be done much more effectively in PS using selective sharpening (PS unsharp mask and history brush). Scanning b&w silver negs, I discern no difference between RGB and grayscale. A 4000 ppi scan will give you a nice sized print on the 1280, and allow for some cropping (funny how cropping always becomes apparent on the screen and not in the viewfinder). If you need a larger file, the scanner ships with Genuine Fractals. I always save the raw scan, and usually save the finished print at max size -no problem in downsizing the final print if you should need a smaller one. In RGB you can fit roughly three scans and prints on a CD for archiving. Also, if you will get a copy of ACDSee and begin using it from the beginning, life will be much easier. Hope this helps. BTW, be sure to check out Kodak Portra 400 b&w film. It has a superb tonal range and you can use ICE with it. It has to be processed by a pro lab with dip and dunk C-41, though, instead of going through the WalMart machines.

Subject: [Digital BW] Scanning B&W 35MM Negatives using Nikon Super CoolScan 4000

I just joined the group a few days ago and sent a message asking for
general suggestions to help me get going with B&W digital prints. I
appreciate all the responses received and think I'll begin with the
MIS Variable Mix Quadtones for my Epson 1280 using Paul Roark's
    workflow information.

In the responses I received, no one mentioned the scanning end. I've
got a Nikon Super CoolScan 4000 for scanning my B&W 35MM negatives
and looking for some general guidelines to follow to optimize the
digital image I will be working with in PhotoShop 7. For instance,
should I set up the scan to create the image size I intend to print?
If I do, what will happen to the print quality if I later decide to
change the print size? (I'll be doing 8x10's and 11x14's mostly)
Should I do the scan in grayscale to begin with or in RGB and should
I mess with any of the curves within the Nikon scanning options or do
all of that manipulation exclusively in PhotoShop?

I have been trying to search the archives for tips/workflows, but
haven't managed to locate this type of information yet.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
