With AE on or off, the negative setting fails to capture highlight
information without fiddling around with the analog gain controls. For
these, however, there does not seem to be a good way to preview effects.
So, it's a bit hit and miss. With the positive film setting the range that
the scanner sees in the original preview is enough to set the histogram end
points easily. It's accurate enough that I don't even feel the need to go
into Photoshop to check the scan there.

I do find that the gamma the machine sets for negative film is more to my
liking that what it does for positive film. So, I sometimes pull the
histogram middle up a bit for the positive film scan of a negative.
