Thom,
I'm sorry to hear about your disaster. I can only report that developing in
D-76 will not seriously screw up XP2. I have examples here on my web page:
http://www.panoramacamera.us/2450test6.html
The image, made on a very bright day, has plenty of latitude and isn't grainy.
I accidently processed a roll of XP2 along with a batch of HP5 in my usual
spit D-76 soup and it was perfectly usable. I have been doing it regularly
ever since. It doesn't have as dark a color tint as the C-41 lab negs. That
btw seems to fade over time and varies in hue from lab to lab in my
experience. I have not made serious comparison tests with C-41 processed film.
