I file both negatives and chromes in hanging slide file pages.  If you cut 
the negatives apart and mount them in slide mounts, you can file them by 
subject.  They are easier to scan in mounts, too.  Each of my 300,000+ 
images has a unique number; for example 61953-31208.   The 619 means 
Honduras, 53 means families, 312 is the number of the hanging slide page 
and 08 is the slot on the page where that image goes.  I can find anything 
in a few seconds (if I have gotten around to refiling it!)
