Mark,

"softproof" is subject to definition. If you just go command Y, you get whatever 
CMYK set up you have in your color prefs - usually some SWOP specs by 
default. If you leave the file on the screen in RGB, you are not softproofing.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
