In Photoshop you can use the Channel Mixer to refine your conversion to B & W. I know this only through hearsay, though, as I use Picture Window Pro, which lets you apply filters to the color image much as you might apply filters to the camera lens or enlarger lens. This seems more intuitive to me. In either program, you can also just extract one channel and see if it produces a more pleasing B&W image than changing the mode. The idea behind all of these different methods is that different images will look better in B&W if you emphasize one R, G, or B channel in a way different than the Image | Mode command does. That's about all I know, as most of my work is now in color so I haven't done any recent experimenting or searching. I know that there are also Photoshop plug-ins which claim to do a better job than native Photoshop, but haven't used them. = = = Original message = = = I've always used the Photoshop Image->Mode command when I needed to convert a color image to grayscale, but I've seen various references to other software used for this purpose. I'd appreciate any information on what software I might consider as an alternative to Photoshop for this purpose and also any technical info on what the software is doing (whether Photoshop or other) when an image is converted from color to grayscale. Also, any thoughts on how to evaluate Photoshop vs the alternatives with respect to the conversion process and resulting image. In other words, in what way would my grayscale images be better if I used a program other than Photoshop 6 do to the conversion?
