Paul Strand-like "bronze" Quadtones

2002-09-16 by Ken Lee

I have fond memories of the Paul Strand retrospective in Philadelphia, back
in the early 1970's. As a teenager, I was swept away by his lovely
warm-toned prints, which I later learned, were toned in Gold, and varnished.

No longer having a darkroom, but preferring that "look" above all others, I
have tried to replicate it in Photoshop, and share it with you.

One advantage of this approach is that it does not require any special
quadtone inks. If you want to change the colors, you can adjust them to suit
each different print, ad infinitum.

To see some sample images and download the curves, see

For a nice tutorial on duotones, quadtones, etc, see the Luminous Landscape
web site at http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/duotone.shtml. I
started out on this path by trying to imporve on his Selenium quadtones.

Best wishes,

Ken Lee
