A greyscale image does not have the R, G, and B channels, and is thus much smaller. It is certainly more economical to save the duotone, which is just a greyscale image and a small .ADO file that desribes the curves. It may well be that Photoshop creates some kind of temporary intermediate RGB file, which it sends to the printer and then discards, but once you convert to RGB and save the image, you have lost the original greyscale information. It seems to me that the best way to retain the original image (in case you want to present it differently later, with a different duotone curve set) is to save it as a duotone. - Ken
