Paper to use in 7600 (or 2200)?

2002-09-18 by Mitch Alland

As indicated in another posting, I am trying to decide whether to get
an Epson 7600 (or a 2100) to replace my 1290 for color and 1160 with
Piezography for b&w. I am leaning toward the 7600 because I would like
to make my basic prints at 16x24 inches, and sometimes make larger
prints, say 22x33 inches.

For b&w prints I have been using Epson Archival Matte and Hahnemuehle
Photo Rag. I must state that I have liked the matte look, which has its
own aesthetic, and have not missed the glossy or semi-glossy prints. In
any case, I don't think that glossy paper is suitable for prints larger
than 12x18 inches, owing to excessive light reflection.

However, looking at the Epson 7600 brochure, I see that Epson considers
that the "Photo Black" ink with Premium Luster Photo, Photo Semi Gloss,
and Premium Semimatte produce the "highest level of photographic
quality." Presumably this refers to printing at 2800x1400 dpi
resolution, which is not possible on matte papers.

So the question is: if I get a 7600, and if ImagePrint 5, produces b&w
prints that are as good as Piezography prints on the 1160, should I
switch to either Photo Semi Gloss or the Premium Semimatte papers.
Does anyone have experience printing with the 7600 on these papers; and
how do prints on these papers compare to prints on the matte papers?
