Epson's response to my question was 6 pin to 4 pin. While the Firewire 
interfact may not impact the scanning speed it will impact the 
performance of other devices using the USB - including my local network 
at home. My laptop has a firewire and it seems to make sense to put the 
scanner on there and get it off my server's USB.

That was the reason for the question.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
