Epson's response to my question was 6 pin to 4 pin. While the Firewire interfact may not impact the scanning speed it will impact the performance of other devices using the USB - including my local network at home. My laptop has a firewire and it seems to make sense to put the scanner on there and get it off my server's USB. That was the reason for the question.
