Running it on its own partition gains nothing, unless the above rules are followed. In fact, running it on a separate partition on the same physical spindle can hurt performance. System optimization is a complex subject, not to be undertaken lightly. For the average user, it is more trouble than it is worth. If the system is too slow, just buy a faster system.
