Re: [Digital BW] Print Fade

Barry,

Unfortunately we would all like the answer to that question, the ink
manufacturers included. We have some ideas from comparison fade tests that
some inks appear to be more resistant to fading and warming than other, but
what that means in terms of real world life is unknown. As it stands at the
moment PiezoTone grays, either WN or Sel, seem to be the best grays and
MIS-FSN black is right at the top also. Epson UltraChromes may be a bit
better but testing is underway.

Regarding MIS-VM the black is the same so it comes down to the grays and
toner inks. I believe that Sepia-VM is built on the FS-Neutral grays and
performs slightly less well than the PT grays. The standard VM grays are the
same as the MIS original Quad inks which are less fade resistant.

As for published "display life years" figures by RIT and Wilhelm we have not
numbers for these inks. We do know that RIT rated the Generations 4 inks at
100+ years and that the Generation 4 black fades pretty quickly compared to
FSN black. I still don't know how to rate those "display years" to real
life.

One of the big problems is deciding what constitutes "failure". I have RIT
results that say failure of a color ink set is when the original density has
dropped 30-35%. You and I might consider the fading unacceptable at a point
much less than that.

Under the conditions you describe you can expect to see some warming but
that it will level off or stabilize at some point. All I can say is hang it
up and let us know how it does. Provided you live that long. <G>
