Is that a question or a statement with a "what now"?
If it's already unchecked, well, it was worth a shot.
If adjustments are putting tonal holes in 16 bit PS files my suspicion 
is that there isn't as much information in the file in the first place 
as the histogram would imply, since it's only showing you eight bits of 
it.
And Photoshop has know way of letting you know that.
