Sorry to jump in so late, but I get nightmares thinking about this 
issue. I had to return a 1280 myself a few months ago-I spent hours 
trying to aggressively align the head so I could get a smooth set of 
grey patches, and realized too late that it is indeed possible to 
overdo it. I spent a couple of days trying to back out of 
my "alignment job" but was never able to do so. Fortunately for me, 
I had a Compusa extended warranty, so they took it back and gave me 
another one on the spot- you might look into that if you do buy 
another one, but nmost likely it just needs a factory alignment 
which would be cheaper than a new one.
