Another less "distasteful" method is with scotch tape.

Burnish a piece of scotch tape onto the corner of a sheet.  
Pull up the tape and if the tape has a white residue on it, this is the
coated side. If the tape pulls up cleanly, ie, with maybe only a few cotton
fibers, then this is the uncoated side.

NB: the white residue is essentially some of the coating pigment.

THis method works everytime.
