Digital BW, The Print

I wasn't sure that the 1160 did this, since I've only had the problem 
on 1280 printer, right after I've installed a new self-filled or CFS 
cart.

Assuming you HAVE just installed new carts, or the carts have lifted 
up, the nozzle is "sputtering" with air. So you get black ink on the 
left side spit out. It is wise to put in heavier paper, like 
heavyweight mat or Archival mat. I cure it by running three cleaning 
cycles without even doing a nozzle check as soon as carts are in. Then 
I do a purge pattern on heavy paper, but I look inside the printer 
carefully- if the black starts pooling on the left I very quickly 
cancel the print. I think at this point I let the thing sit overnight 
turned off. By this time I usually cured it of air in the head.

If you got random black ink spots AND the nozzle patterns jump up and 
down from where they are supposed to be, I would then say you have 
dirt under your head and need to do the towel under the head trick.

It's been awhile since I had to do this, so I'm trying to recall it 
from memory. But it does sound a lot like trapped air in head...and 
that means you sometimes have to wait for it to clear itself 
overnight.
