As a rule, photographers choose epson printers, as they print better photographically than any other brand. You can get CIS ink systems which will reduce the cost of your ink by 80 Percent for dozens of epson printers. (you use 4 ounce bottles of ink directly attched to your cartridges by ink tubes). Check out what printers these are available for at http://inkjetgoodies.com or http://mediastreet.com The epson 1280 is probably the best printer on the market right now for under $400. You can print 13x44 inch prints, should you ever feel the need to do that. No, salesmen hardly ever know anything about printers.
