Hi Ed, Other, much more experienced folks here may give you some more detailed info but as a fellow beginner here are my thoughts: 1) You don't need PS, but you do need a graphics program that allows you to use the PS curves supplied by Paul Roark and others (or a program that allows you to make your own curves). I use both PS and the much more affordable Picture Window Pro by Jonathan Sachs. PWP is a great, fairly inexpensive graphics program designed for photographers. I highly recommend it as it allows you to both import PS curves and create your own (I understand that PWP was used to create some of the curves that are available for download from the kind folks here). 2) As far as I know, none of the MIS b&w inks will cause metamerism. I use the VM inks and have really come to like them - can print very cool to fairly warm prints from the same ink set. 3) If it's a failure, you can return to printing color without any problem.
