Why 8 bit? I scan B&W in RGB.

If you bring your image in in RGB, you'll have the ability to play with
the channels in the channel mixer. I'm not sure why you are
desaturating.

Agreed, it gets the most neutral print of any of my tests with the
Epson driver, no custom profiles, no RIP.
