I agree completely.  Portra 400 B&W is absolutely the best film I 
have ever scanned.  I haven't gone into a wet darkroom in 4 
years, so I can't comment on how these films behave there, but 
for scanning, I can't imaging it getting any nicer than the C41 
Kodak B&W Portra.
