I find the default settings to yeild the max detail in the scan. The raw TIF files look a bit flat but that's what contains the max detail. Don't try to make the raw scan look good, just let the default settings capture the most information then use Photoshop. Basically, I've found that the more I diddle with Vuescan, the more I degrade the scan.
