something ...

I changed the "Preferred Size" (in th Info popup) for 
Photoshop 6 to 800MB, hoping to improve performance
on big multi-layered images.  My system  starting behaving
VERY strangly, like freezing up overnight when I leave
Photoshop running and a big image open.

I changed the "Preferred Size" down to 600MB and things 
seem ok now.  I assume Photoshop was hogging too much
of the memory for the OS to be happy ?

(My machine has 1.25GB).
