I've spent the past few months getting to know an Epson 9600 - which I truly love - but it is NOT the "end all" printer for Black & White (least not with the UltraChrome color inks, which I want to keep). It makes very nice B&Ws, but I'm pretty sure I can achieve better with an ink set designed for monochrome. I have several 'retired' Epson's: a 7000 (w/Outdoor Generations), 3000, 1200 and a 1270, plus a 1160 w/Piezo... and I'm ready to spend some time finding a great ink and workflow for one or more of these machines that will give me GREAT black & white. Variable tone seems desirable - but I suspect that if I found a 'color' I really like, I'd be happy to stick with a single tone. Reading Sue Tallon's post made me think me of the exchanges I took part in with Mark Tucker, and how valuable it is to see, hold, and be able to KEEP examples of various ink sets and papers. The last time I saw the results of a B&W exchange was over a year ago, and I suspect that people have changes things enough - that it might be time for another go. I'd be willing to help plan it, and maybe be the central coordinator. I'd most like to see are what people have chosen as their first choice for Black & White. For me, it's currently the Epson 9600 w/Ultrachromes on EAM or Photorag. I expect to evolve past that, but that's where I am now, and that's what I'd submit for my sample(s). Is there enough interest in doing something like this now? -Clark
