There's no fixed rule, use whatever feels comfortable. I use
1920x1200x85hz because that's what my screen can handle well.

Personally I prefer the following resolutions for the following screen
sizes:

17"-19" 1280x1024
21" 1600x1200
24" 1920x1200

I don't like anything below 80hz, because then I notice the flickering
and it makes my eyes feel painful.
