printer like the 1280/1290 or the 1160.

For about $1000, you can get an Ardito's refurbished Epson 3000 
(17x22 paper), a new Epson 3200 scanner and PiezograpnyBW software. 
Add your choice of quadtone inks carts and you're in business.
