How do you figure? I think you counted duplicates. Say we call black "1" and gray "0.5". I say the possible values are 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, and 4. Then you get 0, 0.3, 1, 1.3, 1.6, 1.9, 2, 2.3, 2.6, 3, 3.3, and 4. The downside is that the new values are nonlinear.
