Tom

I am almost certain that your black cartridge itself does not contain
ink, so the printer is sucking air. I've had a similar problem
recently when I changed from FS to VM inks.

I have the MIS system and the cartridges have holes in the top which
you block with little rubber balls before you vacuum fill. What I have
done to overcome my no black ink problem was to take out the rubber
ball from the cartridge. Then I lifted only the black ink bottle for a
while till the ink rose from the hole. (The bubble in the ink line
started to move as ink started to flow). I then slowly lowered the
black ink bottle till the ink remained stable. I then left it for
about an hour to allow the sponge to saturate with ink. Then I
blocked the hole with a bit of Bostik Prestik and that was the last of
my problem.

If your cartridge does not have a hole in the top just drill a small
2mm (3/16 inch?) hole just through the plastic - not into the sponge.
Don't worry about bits of plastic falling into the cartridge, it
cannot go anywhere. You can do all this with the cartridge.

Hope this helps, cannot harm anything.
