I don't disagree that AA manipulated his prints, but I don't think he manipulated them "as much as they could possibly be manipulated, in the darkroom." Take a look at Jerry Uelsmann's work ( http://www.uelsmann.net ); his prints are certainly more manipulated than AA's. And he does it all in the darkroom, using a series of enlargers.
