I don't disagree, but if the scanner is ONLY capable of capturing that 
range and nothing outside of it, it seems to me that it should, maybe 
even as a default, spread that range over the 16bits.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
