They use a single channel with a neutral density filter. IMO, they produce superior scans than just scanning B&W film with a typical CCD scanner that scans the B&W film in RGB. There also used to be dedicated B&W only flatbed scanners, and pre-press scanners, as I designed a few of them. That was over 10 years ago though, and I haven't seen any since. Austin
